The Sunshine Coast Film Society plans to screen the documentary Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe on April 8 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons (7:30 p.m.), and on April 13 at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt (2 p.m.).

The film is a tribute to the iconic Canadian television program that influenced multiple generations. It features insider perspectives on creator and star Ernie Coombs — plus his many friends and collaborators, both real and imaginary. Coombs’s longtime associates Casey and Finnegan make cameos. The show offers a feel-good blast of nostalgia.

Society membership is required for entry (ages 18+). Book memberships and tickets in advance either online or with cash at the door. Full details are available by browsing to www.scfs.ca.

Flying fiddles for the fiftieth

As part of its golden anniversary, the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts will present two of its festival adjudicators in concert on Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church in Gibsons.

The Twin Fiddles concert features two Canadian masters of the genre: Gordon Stobbe (from Seaforth, Nova Scotia), an Order of Canada recipient for his commitment to fiddle music and Canadian history of the fiddle; and JJ Guy (from Saskatoon), a North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame inductee and winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition.

Stobbe & Guy will be joined by accordion player Annette Fischer. Originally from Switzerland, Fischer now lives in 150 Mile House.

The Sunshine Coast’s own Harmony Hall Fiddlers and Friends, led by Janice Hamilton, will open the show. The ever-popular Coast String Fiddlers will also appear.

The Festival of the Performing Arts society will also sponsor two Twin Fiddles School Shows during the artists’ visit to the Coast. Stobbe and Guy plan to play at Roberts Creek and Cedar Grove elementary schools on April 19, the day after they serve as adjudicators for the Folk Music discipline at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church.

Tickets for the April 19 concert ($20 in advance, $25 at the door, $5 for children and youth at the door) are available from Strait Music in Sechelt, MELOmania in Roberts Creek, and Fong’s Market in Gibsons.

Scott and Rhodes ride again

The winsome Roots and Grooves duo of Rick Scott (an erstwhile Coast resident, playing dulcimer) and Nico Rhodes (on keyboards) will perform at the Pender Harbour School of Music on April 20 and 21.

The April 20 matinee (which starts at 2 p.m.) offers a family-friendly mix of music and laughter for all ages. “It’s for those who can’t sit still for more than 60 minutes,” according to the Pender Harbour Music Society.

The next day at the same time, the two artists will offer a “musical conversation across the generations spiced with mastery, improvisation and humour.”

Tickets are available for purchase by browsing to penderharbourmusic.ca.
