Rosie and The Riveters bring their sassy swing to High Beam Dreams in Gibsons on Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m.

Touted as one of the hottest Canadian singing groups on tour, Rosie and The Riveters hit High Beam Dreams in Gibsons on Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. The group’s name is an homage to Rosie the Riveter, an icon from the women who toiled in industry during the Second World War. In that spirit, 20 per cent of the band’s earnings go to help finance women’s business projects through kiva.org. Their sassy, sweetly harmonic 40s-style swing and folk music was captured on the hit album Ms. Behave. Tickets are $30, available at Gibsons Florist, Lou’s Italian Micro Kitchen, MELOmania, Strait Music, Wildflower and Twigs and online on www.share-there.com.

Vagina Monologues

From the deeply sad to the thoughtfully hilarious, The Vagina Monologues hits below the belt in all the right ways. This all-volunteer production of the 1996 Eve Ensler play at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons is in support of the Together Against Violence project of Sunshine Coast Community Services. The 3 p.m. show is sold out and the 7:30 p.m. performance was close to it at press time. Tickets are $25 from www.share-there.com.

Boudoir Rouge

More than mere burlesque, Boudoir Rouge describes itself as “a self-love movement … wildly bold badassery.” They promise an unforgettable show followed by a night of dancing and liberated fun. Saturday, March 7 at 8 p.m. at Roberts Creek Hall. Tickets $30 at The Kube, Basted Baker and www.share-there.com.

Newsies

It’s the last weekend to catch the high-energy student production of the hit musical Newsies at Chatelech Secondary School Theatre. Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 from Strait Music in Sechelt and www.share-there.com.

Anna times two

There are two opportunities to hear Anna Lumière this weekend, in quite different settings. In her role with Bellows and Strings, Lumière sings and plays ukulele, accordion and piano in a duo with son Noah Ord on violin, mandolin and percussion for a “musical world tour through France, Ireland, Brazil, Canada and Eastern Europe.” Saturday, March 7, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Gibsons Public Market. On Sunday, March 8 at 4 p.m., Lumière performs on piano and vocals at a jazz vespers show at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt with husband Graham Ord on sax, flute and vocals and Aristazabal Hawkes on upright bass. “Freewill offerings accepted.”

French style

Carylann Loeppky is the March feature artist at The Kube in Gibsons. Many of her paintings explore feminine form in a combination of styles that recall 17th-century painters of the French royal court and 20th-century French surrealists. The exhibit’s opening reception is Friday, March 6, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Fialkoswka

Described as “one of the Grandes Dames of piano,” Order of Canada-winner Janina Fialkowska has pleased audiences for more than 40 years with her refreshing and unique approach to the instrument. The Coast Recital Society presents Fialkowska in concert on Sunday, March 8 at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. A pre-performance chat starts at 1:30 p.m., concert at 2:30 p.m. Tickets $10 to $30.

Del Junco returns

Multi-award-winning harmonica master Carlos del Junco is back with The Blues Mongrels to deliver “a no holds barred display of melodic fun and virtuosity,” Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Presented by the Sunshine Coast Jazz and Entertainment Society. Tickets $25.

Pub fun

• Half Cut and The Slackers are in at the Gibsons Legion on Saturday, March 7, with top-40 dance hits from the past 60 years. A lot of danceable gems to choose from there, 8 p.m., $5 to $10.

• The Peter Van Trio hosts the Sunday Jam at the Pender Harbour Golf Club restaurant, March 8 from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission by donation.

Parasite

Who could have predicted the darkly comic South Korean film Parasite would win four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay? Nobody could have, but the film’s brilliance was undeniable. It’s the story of two families, one impoverished, the other wealthy. They interact and things change in a manner that leads to a startling conclusion. The Sunshine Coast Film Society is screening the film three times this month, on Thursday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt, and Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. The darkly-comic social satire explores themes of class, materialism, and social inequity leading to a startling conclusion. English subtitles. See www.scfs.ca

Reading cancelled

Disappointing news for those looking forward to hearing award-winning novelist Kathy Page at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt this weekend. The Salt Spring Island-based author has had to cancel her scheduled Saturday, March 7 reading and chat.
