Art Beat: Recital Society keeps tempo while changing key… performer

Here's what's happening in the Coast's arts scene this week
A. David Fung
Pianist David Fung is a last-minute, but no less esteemed, substitute for the Coast Recital Society’s Sunday performance.

The Coast Recital Society has announced that its original marquee performer—Janina Fialkowska—is unable to perform this weekend, but that an exceptional pianist—David Fung—will appear instead on Sunday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

He will perform a 75-minute program of music by Chopin, Schubert and Ravel.

Fung’s piano virtuosity has been praised by The Washington Post for as “ravishing and simply gorgeous.”

A graduate of the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, Fung continued his studies at Yale University and Germany’s Hannover Hochschule. He is an assistant professor at the UBC School of Music.

There will be no intermission, and vaccine cards must be presented at the door along with a piece of government-issued ID. Audience members are required to abide by B.C.’s mandatory mask policy for indoor spaces.

Tickets can be obtained by emailing [email protected] or by phone at 604 885-0991. Additional details about the Coast Recital Society are available from its website at www.coastrecitalsociety.ca.

Expressive youth will be framed for acts of creativity

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery has issued a call for Sunshine Coast youth aged two to 18 years, inviting them to drop off up to two pieces of artwork between March 3 and 6.

The artworks will be included in the SHOUT OUT Youth Art Exhibition on display from March 10 to 20.

There is no cost to participate and display creations.

Although the event is a yearly tradition, this year Beachcomber Coffee Company will be offering its annual young artists awards specifically to participating youth in this exhibition. The financial awards will be used to help young people acquire art education and supplies.

Proceeds to fund the awards have been collected through sales of the Ben Tour Coastal Colouring Book. Copies are also available for sale at the Gallery Gift Shop.

SHOUT OUT submission forms are available at the Gallery or by visiting gpag.ca/submissions.

Dance performers leap back onto stage

The Competitive Team from the Coast Academy of Dance is presenting a “Sneak Peak” debut performance at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse on Saturday, March 5. Two shows are scheduled, at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Coast Academy of Dance is a Sechelt-based studio that has been in operation since 2021 under the direction of Julie Izad.

Admission is priced at $22. Tickets can be ordered via email at [email protected]. Vaccine cards, photo IDs and masks are required for entry.
