The 2021 Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts has been underway since April 12, with about 200 performers in a variety of musical and non-musical disciplines undergoing adjudication by experts in their field. The process is normally conducted live at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons, but in these not-normal times the process is happening via video submission. The annual Highlights Concert takes place virtually on Sunday, May 2 at 2 p.m. Register to enjoy from the comfort and safety of your own home at coastfestival.com.

Drawing workshops

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council (SCAC) is offering another series of “Skills for Solitude” workshops to develop skills in botanical drawing. Artist Mehran Modarres-Sadeghi will lead the Zoom online sessions, “using various drawing materials such as graphite pencil, pen, and coloured pencil, [to] explore basic drawing techniques of line drawing, shading, stippling, and textural drawing while drawing from wild plants of the West Coast Botanical.” The three-hour, Saturday afternoon workshops start May 8 and run through June 5. The total cost is $70 for SCAC members, $100 for non-members. The series is limited to 20 participants. Register following the links from the SCAC’s website.

Standing Strong

On Saturday, May 1, the Ian Tan Gallery on Granville Street in Vancouver is opening Standing Strong, an exhibition by Gibsons painter Greta Guzek. The show displays 13 new acrylic works by impressionist Guzek, most depicting sinuous arbutus trees in her distinctively joyful and sensual style. No one is suggesting a non-essential trip into Vancouver to view art, but perhaps before the exhibition ends on May 31, travel restrictions will ease up. Meanwhile, the gallery has put images of all 13 pieces online at iantangallery.com.

Live music

On the patio at the Clubhouse Restaurant at the Pender Harbour Golf Course on Friday, April 30 for a 4-to-7-p.m. dinner show is the musical duo Shine, with Kenneth Johnson on keyboards and vocals by Nancy Pincombe. The band Poppa Greg performs the Sunday afternoon show on the patio on May 2, from 2 to 5 p.m.
