My Sea to Sky, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of Howe Sound, is holding a youth art contest – the Howe Sound Art Challenge. To celebrate upcoming World Oceans Day, students from K-12 are invited to submit artwork with the theme, Ocean Life. Entrants are encouraged “to be creative and to share their story about what they love most about where they live within Howe Sound’s precious watershed,” the organization said on its website. “The winning artwork from each grade will receive a cash prize of $50 and will be featured in a special edition 2022 school-year calendar. Students will also receive a free copy of the published calendar (value $30).” The deadline is Sunday, May 30. Winners will be announced on Ocean Day, June 8. Submission details can be found at myseatosky.org.

David King Prize

Touchstone Theatre in Vancouver has created an award program in honour of Sunshine Coast playwright David King, who died in January at age 71. The $3,000 David King Prize will be awarded annually to an individual writer who is developing or has developed a new theatrical comedy. King was an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and songwriter known for his comedic plays produced here on the Coast and across Canada, including Life Skills, and Garage Sale. His play Ocean Blue View, and the Gibsons-based How Things Have Changed, were read by locals Off the Page in their recent season. The submission deadline is Sept. 21. Early details about the prize (a formal submissions announcement is to be made soon) can be found on Touchstone’s website.
