Melanie Dekker entertains live online from Gibsons Dec. 20.

Like all performance venues on the Coast, High Beam Dreams has closed its doors to in-person audiences for the time being as the pandemic hits a peak, but there will be a concert live-streamed from the Gibsons location on Sunday, Dec. 20. Vancouver singer-songwriter Melanie Dekker and her Merry Musicians will play from 12 to 2 p.m., performing tunes from Dekker’s rockin’-out Christmas album, The New Old-Fashioned Way. Tickets and livestream links are $15, available from eventbrite.ca.

Solstice songs
Singer, voice coach, and facilitator Dianne Baker will lead the song circle Odonata SongRise on the longest night of the year, Monday, Dec. 21. Join the singalong at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom or Facebook Live from Dianne Baker’s page.

Art exhibit extended
Gibsons Public Market will be showing its exhibit of paintings by Helen Platt and David Emerson Hall until Dec. 31, in both the atrium and the Coastal Room upstairs. It’s definitely worth a look. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily except Mondays. Holiday hours will be a bit different, so check the website for details. The building will be closed from Dec. 25 to 28.

SCAC awards
Tis the season for, among other things, nominating Coast residents for the Sunshine Coast Arts Council’s Annual Awards. The council oversees awards in four categories: the Anne and Philip Klein Award goes to an individual over 65 years old who began their visual arts exploration later in life; the Gillian Lowndes Award is for longstanding achievement in any arts discipline; the Frances Wasserlein Award honours voluntary leadership in an arts or cultural capacity; and the Louise Baril Memorial Award goes to a Coast resident undertaking advanced study in music. More detailed criteria, and digital and printable nomination forms, are available from the SCAC website. The nomination deadline is Jan. 5, 2021. Presentations will be made (online) on Jan. 23. The awards are made possible through donations made to various endowments managed by the Sunshine Coast Foundation.

Due to the pandemic, all listed live events are subject to change. Check ahead. Space is limited in Art Beat but please let us know about your events at arts@coastreporter.net
