Art Beat: Christmas music and crafts abounding

Here's what's happening in the Coast's arts scene

A Cappella Strait returns with a musical Christmas celebration.

For the first time since December 2019, the Sunshine Coast’s A Cappella Strait chorus is back performing in public with two Christmas concerts this weekend. Under the direction of Janice Brunson, “A Little A Cappella Christmas” will feature seasonal music from medieval to modern, Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at St. Hilda’s Church in Sechelt, and Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons. Winter Harp

The Winter Harp Christmas concert has become an annual event at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. Harps, flutes, violin, percussion, and rare instruments are a standard feature of these popular, medieval-themed shows. Saturday Dec. 4 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets at eventbrite.ca

Sing-along

Christian Life Assembly (CLA) in Gibsons is bringing in a live band to accompany a Christmas Family Sing-Along on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. Join in on Christmas classics and other fun seasonal tunes. The event is a fundraiser for Secret Santa on the Sunshine Coast and the CLA Lunch Love program. Participants can also partake online-only. Tickets at eventbrite.ca.

Winnie for grown-ups

Richard Austin celebrates A.A. Milne’s beloved tales with a Winnie the Pooh Adult Storytime & Tea at the Sechelt Library Community Room at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.

Trouble finds Claire once again

Join Gibsons author Marion Crook as she reads from Perils in Yorkshire, the third novel in her British Book Tours Mysteries series written under the pen name Emma Dakin. The series follows protagonist Claire Barclay, who conducts tours of U.K. locales featured in popular crime novels. As it happens, a homicide often occurs in the vicinity while Barclay is squiring her mystery-loving tourists about. At Gibsons Library on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. A limited live audience can attend at the library (register at 604-886-2130) or join via Zoom (link at library’s website).

Hold My Beer

Coast-based artist Gidget is opening what promises to be a vibrant new show, “Hold My Beer,” at The Kube in Gibsons with a reception on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Gidget will also do her DJ thing, spinning a few tunes for guests. Pop back into The Kube on Saturday for its annual Holiday Craft Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Open studios

Creek Clayworks is holding its annual Holiday Pottery Sale over three days to allow for plenty of spacing in the studio. Elaine Futterman and Mike Allegretti welcome you to join them Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 3, 4, and 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in their Roberts Creek studio at 1738 Lockyer Rd.

While you’re in the neighbourhood, check out potter Beth Hawthorn’s Open Studio weekend at 1551 Lockyer Rd., Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Many new pieces including many with black clay.”

Wolfpup Studios is opening up Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Demonstrations and projects to go.” 3186 Hansen Rd., Roberts Creek.

Craft fairs

The Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre is holding its 15th Annual Arts & Crafts from the Hood on Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Shop from 30-plus of our finest local artisans and crafters.” Provisions Bistro will be onsite for lunch.

An Open House Craft Sale to support St. John’s Church in Davis Bay will feature “cards, angels, pottery, wooden crafts and more.” Bring a donation of socks, scarves, mitts, and hats for children on the Coast and for shelter residents. Saturday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Heads up

Singer-songwriter Deborah Holland plays High Beam Dreams in Gibsons on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets at eventbrite.ca.
