The Reading Series at the Arts Centre presents poet Raoul Fernandes on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. Fernandes’ poetry collection, Transmitter and Receiver, published by the local Nightwood Editions, won B.C.’s Dorothy Livesay Prize and was short-listed for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award, given annually by the League of Canadian Poets to the best volume by a first-time poet. “His poems speak of things we touch or observe every day but raise them to a new awareness,” the Sunshine Coast Arts Council said in a release. The Sunshine Coast magazine, Zoom, is celebrating its 10th anniversary, with an art exhibit at the Sunnycrest Mall location of One Flower One Leaf Gallery, starting on Friday, Nov. 20 and running until Dec. 15. Off the Page off-Coast
The intrepid Off the Page team travels to North Vancouver’s Presentation House Theatre this weekend for a reading of Lowest Common Denominator, by Dave Deveau. It’s a three-character play about divorcee Harmony, who’s having a great time on a date with Peter, until she walks in on him having a great time with her 17-year-old son. Vancity Buzz described the play as “a touching and honest slice of modern life that needs to be seen.” You don’t have to hop on the ferry to see this production as it’s available online via Side Door. Tickets are $7.50. The curtain is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22.
Trans* Fabulous!
Sunday in the Park with Pride Society presents Trans* Fabulous! on Sunday, Nov. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. It’s a Zoom event especially aimed at youth and features special guests Ty Tyson, and Tru Wilson, who are bringing their mothers along as their own guests for the event. Tyson has documented his transition for the past seven years, and now has more than 300,000 YouTube subscribers. Wilson, 17, of Ladner, first made headlines when she filed a human rights complaint against her local Catholic school board for not supporting her transition.
