Following its annual two-week summer closure, the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt reopened this week with two new and unique exhibitions at the Doris Crowston Gallery. Photographer Alan Sirulnikoff and filmmaker Richard Nelson have combined their talents for one of the shows, entitled Altered States, in which Nelson has created a film using Sirulnikoff’s photos. In the other exhibition, At the Edge of Wilderness, Hildegard Westerkamp has created a sound-and-slide installation about ghost towns in B.C. The exhibitions run until Oct. 4. The gallery, at 5714 Medusa St., is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Film fest
The Sunshine Coast Labour Council is hosting the 2020 Canadian Labour International Film Festival, with four film packages available for free in-home screening on Sunday, Sept. 6 from 4 to 9:30 pm. Featured are The Ballad of John Henry; I Another: An Experience in Labour Justice; KAR; and, “a package of 15 exquisite international short films.” Details about the films and how to access them are on the Sunshine Coast Labour Council’s Facebook page. At the Roberts Creek Legion, local trio The Georgia Fats bring their gritty blues to the outdoor stage Friday, Sept. 4, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 5, The High Quadra Ramblers do a few sets of traditional Appalachian, old-timey and Celtic music, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. And on Sunday the 6th, between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., the eight-member Vanrays come up from Vancouver to deliver “a Motown beatdown in a shark skin suit ... wailing like it’s gospel … with a curb-stomping rhythm.” To meet pandemic protocols, admission for all shows is by table reservation only, through rclegionevents.com. On Saturday, Sept. 5, The Hook plays the 101 Brewhouse in Gibsons.
Singer-songwriter Shari Ulrich is back on the Coast, laying down some three-part harmonies in a trio including her daughter, Julia Graff, and Cindy Fairbank. They play High Beam Dreams on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. Doors at 1:30. Tickets at eventbrite.ca.
The final Slow Sundays of the season is on Sept. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m., with a packed lineup, including the Jill Shatford Jazz Trio; The del Maestros; Mexico City’s Carlos Salinas with British guitarist Cydney Uffindell-Phillips; and The Van Aldens.
On the Clubhouse Restaurant deck at the Pender Harbour Golf Course, you can catch the Steve Hinton Band on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Congrats to Sunshine Coast poet John Pass, who is among 10 B.C. writers chosen to be featured in the Poetry in Transit program for the next year. Amidst the overhead advertising mounted in Translink and BC Transit vehicles, passengers can enjoy a poetry excerpt from Pass’s book This Was the River, from Madeira Park’s Harbour Publishing.
