Art Beat: A weekend (and more) of Christmas arts and music

Here's what's on the go in the Coast art scene this week
A. Suncoast Phoenix Choir

The Suncoast Phoenix Community Choir will perform a choral concert of seasonal music and a sing-along at three venues in coming days. Their first stop is St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt on Friday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. Then, Saturday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m., at Calvary Baptist Church in Gibsons. Tickets are $20 and are available at Strait Music in Sechelt, or from choir members. No tickets will be sold at the doors. On Monday, Dec. 20, the choir will sing at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden at 7 p.m. For tickets to that performance call 604-740-3969.

St. Hilda’s own choir will hold a free Christmas carol sing-along on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m.

Sound Journey

Chris Niebergall will be on the digeridoo and Kym Chi will play crystal singing bowls for a Winter Solstice Sound Journey, 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19 at Yoga by The Sea in Roberts Creek. You can pay at the door ($25), if seats are left. Register in advance at [email protected].

Jazz on the menu

Tickets are still available for a special jazz dinner show on Thursday, Dec. 23: The Night Before the Night Before Christmas, at the Roberts Creek Legion. The group Anagram (Anna Lumiere and Graham Ord) have invited a few friends along for the musical ride and you’ll have to come by to see just who they are. Dinner at 5 p.m., music from 7 to 10 p.m. Book seats or a table at rclegionevents.com.

Muppets!

The Sechelt Library will have the cocoa and popcorn ready for an all-ages screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol, on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. Register in advance at 604-885-3260.

A Christmas Carol

Gibsons Public Library is presenting two lively, one-hour readings of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets are free but must be picked up in person at the library. Cans or jars of food donations for the Food Bank will be gratefully accepted. Masks are required for ages 5 and up.

Winter Market at The Market

Gibsons Public Market is holding a Winter Market starting Friday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m.  and running through the weekend, Saturday, Dec. 18 and Sunday, Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There’s lots going on each day, with workshops, “Scuba Santa” photos and artisanal goodies. Check the market’s website for details.

Christmas Bazaar

Local arts, crafts and collectables will be on offer at a Christmas Bazaar at David Bay Community Hall (5123 Davis Bay Rd.) on Saturday, Dec. 18 from 12 to 4 p.m.

On Friday, Dec. 17, an evening of Spanish-style guitar and dance is on tap on Friday, Dec. 17 at the Roberts Creek Legion with Susana Abreu Williams and dancer Andrea Flamenco.

Joe Stanton is in at Batch 44 in Sechelt at 7 p.m.

The Ween cover band Captain Fantasy plays the 101 Brewhouse in Gibsons from 8 to 11 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec. 19, catch the Steve Hinton Band at 2 p.m. at the Pender Harbour Legion, Madeira Park.
