Art Beat: A Cappella Strait and Choralations Children’s Choir celebrate anniversaries

A Cappella Strait choir and the Choralations Children’s Choir are celebrating momentous anniversaries this month: 40 years of singing together for the A Cappella Strait choristers and 34 years for the young voices of Choralations.

A Cappella Strait choir and the Choralations Children’s Choir are celebrating momentous anniversaries this month: 40 years of singing together for the A Cappella Strait choristers and 34 years for the young voices of Choralations.

The groups are looking back and looking forward at upcoming spring concerts, which take place on Friday, May 31 at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church and Saturday, June 1 at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church in Gibsons. Both concerts begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets ($20 for general admission) are available by emailing [email protected], at Strait Music in Sechelt, or with cash at the door. Children under 12 enter for free.

Tree hits the road

The Imagination Network (a collaboration of Deer Crossing the Art Farm, Emily Carr University and Douglas College) continues to transplant its Listening Tree into locations around the Sunshine Coast. The tree invites visitors to submit comments and suggestions about ageing with dignity in local communities.

The tree’s next engagement will be in Gibsons at the Gibsons Recreation Centre. It will make a final appearance during a leaf-strewn closing event on June 11 at Sunnycrest Mall.

Schedule all sewn up

The Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild plans to hold its monthly meeting on Saturday, May 25 at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre (at 5604 Trail Avenue; enter through the back door). 

Doors open at 9:30 a.m., followed by a mini-workshop at 10 a.m. A business meeting follows from 11 a.m. to noon. The program (a table sale) starts at 12:05 p.m.

This is the last gathering of the guild until Sept. 28. Guests are welcome with a $10 admission fee. More information is available at scquiltersguild.com.

Heritage volunteer honoured

The 2024 Heritage BC awards, announced last week, posthumously honoured a resident of the northern Sunshine Coast. Wendy Mobley, a docent with the Townsite Heritage Society of Powell River, was deservedly awarded the Outstanding Impact award for volunteerism.

“Wendy showed outstanding dedication to the Henderson House Living Museum in her years of volunteering,” said Britney Dack, Chair of Heritage BC. “Honouring her with this award posthumously is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible impact she had on her community because she was passionate about the importance of local heritage.”

One-day art show

The vibrancy and colours of spring herald a one-day art show that will showcase the work of three local artists: Keely Halward, Tina Flux and Kandice Keith. The show is May 25, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3204 Huckleberry Road in Roberts Creek. The artists promise a joyful experience filled with bright, colourful artwork that captures the essence of the season.

Mimosa by the harbour

The Pender Harbour Music Society rounds out its season by presenting the Mimosa ensemble on May 26 at 2 p.m. at the School of Music. Mimosa draws on traditions as varied as jazz, Brazilian sambas, French ‘60s pop and cabaret music to concoct its own unique sound. The group has released critically-acclaimed albums and has sold out festival appearances all over Canada.
