Fun choir
The Suncoast Phoenix Choir gave a purely fun and entertaining concert in Gibsons last weekend. With the theme of Canadian music, the 50-member strong choir sang through the Scots and Irish pioneer songs and the uniquely Canadian folk tunes such as Grand Hotel. “There’s a place in Vancouver the loggers know well…” The several Stan Rogers tunes were a delight.
Six of the choir broke ranks to recite the famous Robert Service classic poem, The Cremation of Sam McGee, and there were several solos with Rod Olafson on clarinet and Phyllis Dyson on flute. Choir leader and conductor Sara Douglas was a bundle of barefoot energy and encouraged the audience to sing along on such rousing folk songs as I’se the B’y and Alouette.
Culture ambassador
BC Culture Days has announced the winners of the Ambassador and Awards program and local artist Miyuki Shinkai of Gibsons has been selected to organize a family art workshop. Each ambassador was awarded $1,000 towards the production of their own Culture Days event and will act as spokesperson for Culture Days. They will engage the public to discover the behind-the-scenes world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in their community during the Culture Days weekend, Sept. 25, 26, 27. Culture Days is a collaborative movement to encourage awareness, participation, and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.
