Landing shows
The Landing Gallery in Gibsons (436 Marine Dr.) features work from George and Millie Doubt for the month of August in the show room. They are exhibiting a series of watercolours depicting landscapes, orchestras, and hockey. Also at the gallery is a feature exhibition of all new, wet felted works from Akaleka Owleye, including nuno silk scarves, felt hats, wall hangings and three-dimensional, felted textural cocoons. The show opened last week and runs through August.
Weekend music
Music in the Landing this weekend starts Friday, Aug. 7, 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gibsons Farmers Market with young singer/songwriter Sam McLennan. Saturday in Pioneer Square, listen to the del Maestros with Steeve and Royce playing croony rock and roll. Saturday evening bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets for singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist Ken McBride at 7 p.m. followed by a new band on the Coast, Whistle Stop, featuring Brent Fitzsimmons, Andre Bate, Gary McGuire, Jenny Groves and Ian McLatchie. Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Sun Dial stage listen to the acoustic sounds of Jack & G up close and personal.
Local authors
While you’re attending the Festival of the Written Arts that opens next Thursday, Aug. 13, stop by the table of the independent, self-published authors as well and see what they have to offer. They’re all Sunshine Coast writers with a variety of work. Jan Jensen sells her popular recipe books for healthy living while Sheila Weaver represents the Gibson’s Landing Writers with their collection of stories and poems. You’ll enjoy the energy of writer and athlete Micheal Mann and become engrossed in how Lynne Pettinger describes her extraordinary career. Several others will show their original works, from cookbooks to informative non-fiction, and there will be a few new additions to the group. Also, there might be a visit from the Coast’s patriarch of poetry, Terry Barker. Look for the authors in the big tent above the Festival pavilion.
