Once a perennial favourite, Alpha Yaya Diallo is coming back to the Roberts Creek Hall next Saturday, Nov. 2. And he's bringing the whole show, including a dancer in this Live Music and Dakota Ridge societies fundraiser.
For those of you who remember his previous engagements here on the Coast, you'll recall that he always has everyone on the dance floor. The three-time Juno-winner for Best Global Music has been recognized as one of Canada's leading music performers in any genre.
His intoxicating mix of African styles and rhythms comes from a youth spent travelling around his homeland in West Africa with his doctor father. He listened to the traditional music of the different cultures he encountered in the region, learned how to play guitar and then added his own unique voice while incorporating Brazilian, Cuban and reggae influences.
He found a way to unite the traditional with the contemporary to produce his own style of rich and hypnotic music that doesn't stray too far from his roots. Diallo has been called "one of the most inspired and inspirational artists on the world beat circuit."
Adept at acoustic and electric guitar, he also plays many African percussion instruments, writes his own compositions and possesses a fine voice, singing in many different languages. But you don't have to understand the words; you need only enjoy the experience of his rare talent and ability.
