Warehouse art

The artistic force behind Simply Warehouse is set to do their third annual show opening Friday, June 12. The dynamic group of four local women with an artistic vision first shared their creativity in 2013, to great reviews. Following their debut, the foursome took their art to a new level, entering a show in Vancouver in 2014, with Carol La Fave winning and then continuing their success with Simply Warehouse 2. This year another artist, Lore Schmidts, joins founders Donna Stewart, Charly Mithrush, Kasia Krolikowska and Carol Lafave.

They’ve outgrown the little warehouse they started in and are moving just a few doors down. June 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. is the opening reception and on this night 10 per cent of all sales will go to the local SPCA. June 13 hours are from noon to 9 p.m. and Happy Hour Ruby Martini is from 4 to 5 p.m. Donations for the drinks and 10 per cent of sales from this day will benefit the Ruby Slipper Fund. On June 14 the show is open from noon to 5 p.m. and 10 per cent of sales will go to the Sechelt Food Bank. The show is at 1877 Field Rd., Wilson Creek. For more see: www.facebook.com/simplywarehouse

Suncoast Phoenix

The Suncoast Phoenix Choir performs on Friday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Gibsons and on Saturday, June 13 at 7 p.m. at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church, Sechelt. This 50-voice choir under the direction of Sara Douglas is accompanied by Paula Seward. The Choir is a union of two coastal choirs: the Suncoast Singers and the Phoenix Choir. Now they meet together in Davis Bay on Thursday evenings. This season they celebrate being Canadian, and will sing a number of songs about farming, trains, loggers, stampedes, and just plain enjoying life in Canada. There will be a reading of The Cremation of Sam McGee not to be missed, as well as an audience sing along with some quintessentially Canadian songs. Admission is by donation.

Halfmoon performance

On Saturday, June 13 students of the Halfmoon Bay Performing Arts (HBPA) perform their dancing and singing show at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons. The children aged three to 13 years perform to music from Cats and a mix of new and old music from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $13 adults, $10 children, available from Elaine Hunter at 604-885-3844 or HBPA school students.

FOWA

Tickets for the Festival of the Written Arts went on sale at the end of May for this year’s event August 13 to 16 and already four of the speakers have sold out the 400-plus-seat Rockwood Pavilion. But as festival producer Jane Davidson always says, that means that 17 other events are still available. See www.writersfestival.ca or phone 604-885-9631.

CD launch

For the third summer solstice in a row, Coastal gents, the Brothers in Farms, are gearing up to release the final album in the trilogy they planned back in 2012. Following Passion (2013) and Patience (2014), Purity Book III promises fans a chance to hear the brothers in their natural element.

“Purity seemed like an appropriate title, given that we really just met in the Glass Teepee [recording studio], built a great live sound, drew some great energy together, pushed record and played the songs,” says singer/guitarist Chris Hergesheimer.

The Brothers bill themselves as “a people’s band” delivering “genre-hopping Sunshine Coast party music.” Fans can expect a full-on dance party when the Brothers release their new CD and rev up the Roberts Creek Legion on Friday, June 19 at 9:30 p.m.

Coast Confidential

Arbutus Sounds Chorus invites you to join them on an hour-long journey, Coast Confidential: Flashbacks in Story and Song, as they explore Sunshine Coast highlights from the last century. The Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International and sings a cappella in four-part harmony, under the direction of Deb Sneddon. Shows are on Friday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden, 5941 Mason Rd. in West Sechelt. Admission is by donation.

Sostenuto

Sostenuto is performing this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Persephone Brewing Co. in Gibsons. The atmosphere is casual, family-friendly and fun. Come enjoy French musette, Swedish folk music, Brazilian choros, jazz and originals on accordion, piano and violin.

Gala Concert

Tickets are available for a very popular annual event on July 10, the 15th annual Gala Concert of performers from the Coast School of Celtic Music. The concert takes place at Rockwood Pavilion, Sechelt at 7 p.m. Tickets for $20 are on sale at the Sechelt Visitor Centre, Laedeli in Gibsons or at the door, if any are left.
