"Dame Evelyn rocks," wrote one enthusiastic critic about Evelyn Glennie, the brilliant percussionist.
Glennie performs with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anne Manson, in the opening concert of the 2009/10 Coast Recital Society season, Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2:30 p.m., at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.
Glennie has to her credit numerous recordings, compositions, videos and books, and has commissioned 150 new works. She has overcome profound deafness to become the first musician to create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, with more than 100 performances around the world each year, including collaborations with a who's-who of other artists including Naná Vasconcelos, Béla Fleck, Björk, Bobby McFerrin, Sting, Emmanuel Ax, The King's Singers and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Next to come in this season's CRS seven-concert series is one of Spain's most exciting new artists, the young pianist Javier Perianes. Perianes performs Saturday, Oct. 17.
The Vancouver choir musica intima returns to the CRS on Nov. 1. Canadian baritone Russell Braun and pianist Carolyn Maule appear on Nov. 22, in a performance of Schubert's great song cycle Die Winterreise. In the new year, the internationally acclaimed Tokyo String Quartet performs on Jan. 11; the Osiris Trio makes a most welcome return to the series on March 7; and the brilliant young Vancouver pianist Avian Yu concludes the season on March 21.

"In these difficult, challenging times, we believe that music and the arts are more important than ever. We remain committed to bringing the finest classical performers to the Sunshine Coast and to ensuring that these concerts remain accessible to everyone on the Coast, through our subscription concert series, as well as through our Artists in the Community outreach program that presents concerts in local schools and eldercare residences."
All concerts take place Sunday afternoons, except for the recital by Perianes.
