A complete immersion of art

Oct. 21 to 23 will bring a full weekend of arts and entertainment to the Coast.

Oct. 21 to 23 will bring a full weekend of arts and entertainment to the Coast. You can visit a mosaic of local arts studios, participate in a creative workshop, attend a classical music performance, and bring your family to a children's show all within one weekend.

Most events are free at this year's Sechelt Arts Festival, including a juried art show, art and music workshops, family entertainment, classical music performances, an emerging artist showcase, and a New Music kitchen party.

These events will be held in venues that are participating in the Art Crawl creating a three-dimensional art experience. Family entertainment will be presented at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, where the performances will be inspired and surrounded by an exquisite art installation, Human Nature, produced by Cody Chancellor and Jennifer Norquist-Chancellor.

A provisional short list of artists' works that will be presented at the juried art show has been announced.

A total of 68 artists submitted work, 33 artists were short listed and 41 works have been selected. They include works by Todd Clark, Jan Poynter, Jane Richardson, Frank Levine, Donna Balma, R.B. Wainwright, Julia Dodge, Lore Schmidts, Jack Gibson, Nadina Tandy, Helen Broadfoot, Bob Evermon, Doris Biddle, Ian MacLeod, Heather Gatz, Brian Romer, Doug Jinkerson, Betty Pehme, Lez Niepo, Ross Muirhead, Leif-Kritian Freed, Jack Ploesser, Wayne Harjula, Timothy Niebergall, Rebecca Samaras, Tim McLaughlin, Don Petry, Alanna Wood, Janice McFegan, Kristjana Gunnars, Larissa Hsia, Eileen Berczik and Patricia Jobb.

The District of Sechelt will purchase one of these works for its permanent collection. The winner of the purchase award will be selected by juror Greg Bellerby, director of the Scott Gallery at Emily Carr University, and announced on Oct. 18.

Bellerby selected the initial short list of artists' work based on a review of electronic images of all entries. He will jury the show one more time on Oct. 17, after the "real" artwork has been submitted.

The Juried Art Show will be open from Oct. 19 to Oct. 23 at the Seaside Centre from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. All works in the show will be for sale.

The Sechelt Festival of the Arts is presented in collaboration with Coast Cultural Alliance (producers of the Sunshine Coast Art Crawl), providing the community with a full roster of art events. Learn more at www.secheltfestivalofthearts.com.
