The Alcan String Quartet from Quebec will be joined by Montreal clarinetist Mark Simons to perform a unique program of classical and “contemporary meets klezmer” music, this Monday, June 23, at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.
The quartet is on the West Coast to perform in Quartet Fest West and Eine Kleine Summer Music on Vancouver Island. They added time to the end of their visit to play one concert in Gibsons at the urging of the local MLA Nicholas Simons, youngest brother of the clarinetist.
“It’s an opportunity to see one of the best quartets in Canada and one of our country’s most talented and versatile clarinetists,” Nicholas said.
The Alcan Quartet is made up of Laura Andriani and Nathalie Camus, violin, Luc Beauchemin, viola, and David Ellis, cello. It has an impressive discography, performing and recording with numerous Quebecois, Canadian and International musicians.
Along with the Beethoven String Quartet in D major, the concert will feature the Mozart Clarinet Quintet, and Klezmer Fantasy for clarinet and strings, a piece by American composer Harold Seletsky, a brilliant work that captures some of the colours of klezmer music.
Tickets are $15, available at Laedeli, Gaia’s Fair Trade, and at MELOmania in Roberts Creek.
