Workshops prepare Sechelt families for changes brought on by dementia

Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Dementia, one of B.C.’s most pressing health issues, creates many challenges for Sechelt families.

Fortunately for them, the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. can help.

The Society brings two free workshops to the Sunshine Coast on Monday, April 25.

The first workshop, Understanding Communication, shows caregivers how communication is affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Participants will explore effective ways of facilitating communication and providing support to the person with dementia. It runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The second workshop, Transition to and Life in Residential Care, is designed for family caregivers. Running from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., it will cover: decision-making and strategies for easing the transition of a family member to a residential care facility; the role of the regional health authority and its case managers; assessing long-term care facilities for placement; working effectively with a care team and enhancing your visits.

Both workshops take place at Sechelt Hospital. Pre-registration is required, by contacting Kerri Sutherland at 604-984-8348 or [email protected].

The workshops are free thanks to partial funding by the province of B.C., Provincial Employees Community Services Fund, Seacliff Foundation, RBC Foundation, Phyliss and Irving Snider Foundation, Merck Canada, Community Connection Health Foundation, Margaret Rothweiler Charitable Foundation, Cadillac Fairview, Paul Lee Family Foundation, Lohn Foundation, Wheeler Family Foundation, Pfizer Canada Inc., Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation and by the generous contributions of individual donors.
