Once again the welcome mat is out to all Sunshine Coasters to attend the fun-for-all annual Labour Day picnic, from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at Dougall Park in Lower Gibsons.

The picnic is sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Labour Council to say thank you to the community and to celebrate the contribution of working people to society.

This free annual event features refreshments, hot dogs and burgers fresh off the barbecue and succulent corn on the cob. Join in or cheer on the participants in the pie-eating contest and the corn-shucking contest. The kids will enjoy balloons and getting their faces painted and children of all ages will enjoy the children's story theatre. Entertainment includes Local Voices and The Copper Stills.

Speakers include messages from local union presidents and Powell River - Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons. There will be information tables by a number of Sunshine Coast organizations.

This year's featured speaker is Lyle Kristiansen, retired IWA officer/activist and past-president of the Nelson, Trail and District Labour Council. Kristiansen served as the NDP Kootenay West MP for 10 years between 1980 and 1993. He will speak about how labour's achievements have benefited all Canadians and how the political/corporate attack on working people, from 1976 to the present, damages our whole society. He will address the need to broaden alliances to protect both our communities and our democracy.Kristiansen and his wife Vera live in Pender Harbour.
