Sunshine Coast veterinarian Hershel Frimer will host a public fundraiser for the Uganda Goat Project at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The evening features a slideshow by Frimer about his experience volunteering in Southwestern Uganda on the Goat Project, as well as live music, great food and more. The goal is to raise at least $2,000 through donations and event tickets.
Advance tickets are available from Eagle Ridge Veterinary Hospital (Sechelt) and The Landing Vet Clinic (Gibsons). Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Meal tickets are by donation (minimum suggested $10). If you cannot attend and would like to make a donation to the project, you may do so at either clinic where tickets are sold. Vets Without Borders tax receipts are available upon request for donations of $25 or more.
Based in Mbarara, Uganda, the Uganda Goat Project trains farmers, students and women of the community in animal husbandry to support and expand the local economy of goat production. In 2006, Canadian vet Claire Card from the University of Saskatchewan began collaborating with the Foundation for AIDS Orphaned Children and Vets Without Borders to develop and implement a goat production project in Mbarara, Uganda.
Each year a team of Canadian vets travels to Uganda and contributes to the goat project. While in Mbarara, the team hosts workshops covering goat management issues like nutrition, reproduction, vaccination, disease prevention and community partnerships.
