Tiniest cucumber takes show

They brought the biggest zucchini, the loveliest scented sweet peas, the leaf with the most bug-eaten holes and the best flower hair adornment to the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden's Harvest Festival last Saturday to be judged in the harvest contest

They brought the biggest zucchini, the loveliest scented sweet peas, the leaf with the most bug-eaten holes and the best flower hair adornment to the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden's Harvest Festival last Saturday to be judged in the harvest contest.

Out of the 11 entries, many of them by young people, the judges chose the best in show, a cucumber so tiny it could sit on the head of a nail, submitted by Erin Russell. Youngsters Oscar and Atticus with their freshly-dug ugliest potato were also close contenders.

Volunteer organizer Mary Blockberger said this second annual festival event drew a greater crowd than last year with many more kids and young families attending. Visitors went on tours of the veggie garden, chatted with plant vendors, enjoyed a Sechelt Rotary Club burger, listened to music, watched a magic show and sampled a new snack, kale chips, made fresh from the garden.
