The grade 6/7 students at Halfmoon Bay Community School have been working hard to give back this season. The students learned hand weaving to create coin bags, painted tree cookie ornaments and made beeswax-coated fabric food wraps. All of their items were sold in a community craft fair to raise funds for their project.

The money raised, along with donations from community members and businesses, was used to collect or purchase almost $1,000 worth of toiletries, personal hygiene items and small gifts. With help from the Halfmoon Bay Community School coordinator and their teacher, the students sorted and organized the goods and put together 30 shoebox sized personal hygiene kits that will be distributed by Community Services to vulnerable youth in the Sechelt area. The class has also organized and prepared a meal for the Sechelt homeless shelter where any extra hygiene items will be donated.

The goal of this project was to help students become aware of the needs in our own community. They have been learning that many people have times in their life when they have benefited from a helping hand and to have empathy and understanding for those in need.
