SCCA thanks volunteers

On Oct.

On Oct. 18, the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) held its annual volunteer thank you event - a time when the SCCA can recognize those who have contributed notable time and effort in doing the work of the SCCA and helping to preserve our natural heritage.

To all those who were mentioned during the evening, thanks again for all your help and support. Without your energies, the SCCA's work could not be done.

The SCCA also recently wrapped up its third annual fundraising raffle. This year's first prize of a 13' Seaward Halo kayak was won by Phillip Spour of Langley, second prize of his and her Helly Hansen jackets donated by Mr. Mender were won by Garnette and Michael McCue of Sechelt, and the third prize of an Inlets Tour for four donated by West Coast Wilderness Lodge was won by Irene McDermott of Vancouver. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to everyone who purchased tickets in support of the SCCA.

As a special event, and through the financial support of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), the SCCA was fortunate to have Manfred Krautter from the University of Stuttgart speak on the ancient and extremely rare glass sponge reefs, which are located just off the shores of Trail Bay.

Thought to have died out 40 million years ago, and only recently rediscovered in B.C. waters, these are unique living structures found nowhere else in the world. As yet they have no protection from various impacts, and the SCCA along with CPAWS, Marine Life Sanctuaries Society and other groups are working to see that these extremely rare life forms are protected from further destruction. If not done quickly, they may no longer exist on this planet.
