Get out the buckets and spades for the annual Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition. The date is always determined by the summer’s lowest tide, and this year it occurs on Saturday, Aug. 1, kicking off the BC Day long weekend with a family-friendly day of fun in the sun. Registration for group, family, and youth 12 and under teams (or solo artists) begins at 11 a.m. at Davis Bay Beach; fees are still just $10. Construction kicks off at 11:30 following the opening ceremonies. Entries will be judged on originality, difficulty, execution, use of space, and the wow factor (how did all of these factors come together?).
While the excitement builds along with the sand sculptures, local group Zonolite provides the tunes for dancing on the beach. Prizes will be awarded at 2:45, shortly before the tide comes in.
And then the party begins. Just try and keep from dancing as entertainer Jim Taylor rolls out the music in Mission Point Park from 3 to 5 p.m. Remember to bring your sunscreen, hat, and water.
Organizers from the Davis Bay Parkway Society note that this year’s event is being presented in partnership with the BC Lupus Society’s local chapter, Akro Swirls, with the goal of raising awareness of the disease. Look for their information tent in Mission Point Park.
In 2014, more than 38 sand sculptures drew visitors from Hawaii, New Zealand, and California.
Attending the Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition is a cherished summer ritual for many families and because it coincides with a long weekend, organizers expect their largest competition ever.
Because parking is limited in Davis Bay, transit is recommended. Bus stops are located just steps away from the beach and adjacent Mission Point Park.
