The annual Davis Bay sandcastle competition on Aug. 1 brought out 45 entries, a record number according to their Facebook page.
There were three categories that each awarded top three winners – although it must have been hard for the judges to decide because all of the sand structures we’re really impressive.
Many of the builders broke away from the classic bucket and wet sand technique, opting for their own sculpting tools to create flat edges and detailing. Some even had sprayers to keep the sand wet while they built.
One group of children built a giant birthday cake for their entry, then celebrated the birthday next to it on the beach.

“This is the coolest birthday ever,” one kid said.
Live music by Zonolite was performed at the beach during the event. Jim Taylor performed in Mission Point Park afterwards.
A press release sent out two days after the event thanked the judges, Grade 11 Chatelech students and their volunteers.
The winners of this year’s sandcastle competition for the family category – with 23 entries – are first prize: #43 Squid Sinks Boat; second prize: #46 Geometry Castle; and third prize: # 18 Volcano Lava.

Honourable mention was given to #38 Jellyfish, #44 Starfish Castle and #1 Snowman.
In the group category – with 15 entries – #26 Minions took first prize; second prize went to #33 Coast-opoly; and #30 Sandcastle took third prize.
Honourable mention was given to #28 shíshálh Nation.

The youth category had seven entries. First prize went to #2 Shark and Octopus; second prize: #4 Mine Craft Squid; and third prize: #5 Domo, with honourable mention going to #8 Starfish.
