Who doesn’t like to get a close look at firetrucks? Nobody, that’s who! Your local Xwesam/Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department is putting on the burgers this Sunday for an Open House and Community BBQ! We can finally have this family event, your chance to meet and greet your firefighters, as well as spend a bit of coin on some good eats – money that will go to various membership-driven projects. There will be answers about recruitment, information on the FireSmart program and the emergency alert app, Voyent Alert. Ask about the new training facility going up, it’s hard to miss! Rain or shine, the trucks will be out and the crew will be at your service (as always) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Sunday, June 5. See you there.

New name, same commitment. The Arka Brotherhood men’s group will be hosting an open house on Monday, June 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Roberts Creek Community Hall. The evening will consist of a short introductory talk followed by some of the men sharing their experience in the brotherhood. Read the code, see if it resonates with you, at: arkabrotherhood.com.

Brain Freeze Trivia is upon us. After tying for last place, I need to bring my “EH?” game! (got a beer question right, so I have that going for me). Friday June 3 at 6:45 p.m., have your butt in a seat at our little Legion for an enjoyable round of brain melting trivia, followed by old school hip-hop with Buzy B & B-dy Bass by Bridge! Dean will be serving it up hot, as he does Tuesdays to Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m.!

A new event with the hallmarks of a regular good time: Tall Tales and Tequila – Story Telling Circle with Mike the Bartender. Tuesday, June 7, from 7 to 10 p.m. Explore the art of the story! Share something funny, exciting, interesting, or just come to listen. Bring stories from your life, based on truth, but some artistic license is most definitely allowed. Members free, guests by donation. Remember, the Graham Brown Band returns Friday, June 10. Jazz is Thursdays and jam night is Wednesday.

As bears prepare for their mating season, males will begin to “court” females, and so, to protect her yearlings, the mum disperses her young, creating a distressing time for these 17-month-old bears. As they find their own home territory, it’s extremely important (at all times) to secure all attractants, but especially now as these young bears learn to survive on their own. Bears attracted to non-natural food sources are at risk of being killed. Visit www.scbearalliance.com to learn more about coexisting with our resident bears.

Be on hand at Roberts Creek Hall, Tuesday June 14 at 7 p.m. as Donna Shugar, Mark Lebbell and Andreas Tize answer questions put to them, so we may become better informed on what it takes to be an SCRD director and/or deal with the SCRD board. Submit your questions to: kellybacks@rocketmail.com.
