Roberts Creek: Reelin’ in the years

The Gumboot Nation has always been, to me, about connections, connections with the community, connections with nature, connections with the self.

The Gumboot Nation has always been, to me, about connections, connections with the community, connections with nature, connections with the self. There are a few annual events that allow us to connect as a community on a larger scale and this Saturday, March 14, Seedy Saturday is here! The Sunshine Coast Seed Collective and One Straw Society host this 25-year-old spring tradition from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Roberts Creek Community School. A free community event to celebrate and learn about food, gardening, seed saving and all things green! With children’s hands-on activities and amazing presenters, free seed exchange, a market to buy seeds, seedlings, plants, food etc., there is something for everyone! Look for the silent auction of hand-crafted birdhouses. The Library will be on site selling gently used gardening books. And make sure you take in the parallel event at the Masonic Lodge, too. The more Seedy Saturdays the better!

Friday, March 13 at the RC Legion is a Burger and Beverage Fundraiser in support of Roberts Creek Scouts to help send two Scouts and their leaders to a jamborette in Belgium. Feast for a good cause from 5 p.m. to close.

Saturday March 14, the #219 brings Mud Bay from Vancouver, an energetic evening of live roots, blues and R&B. Playing rockin’ roots and blues classics since 1978, they will share tunes from their four studio albums. Tickets at the door, 8:30 p.m. $8 for members, $15 non-members.

Legion #219 is a great place to kick back and enjoy good food (Wilde Kitchen FTW!) good company (hi Gail! you too, Mike) and good times (jams on Tuesday with A.D.D. and Friday dinner shows with local talents). Roberts Creek Legion has been reelin’ in 73 years as our collective living room. Is your membership up to date?

Talk about reelin’ in the years, March 17 marks 1,559 years since the passing of St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland. The snakes were actually pagans, by the way. I may or may not buy whiskey for the occasion (Irish spelling, Scots drop the “e”) but there is some green in my wardrobe.

Mark your calendar. On March 21 Deviki Meditation and Yoga by the Sea host Journey Home to Self, an afternoon of pranayama, mudra and mantra leading to meditation.

Reelin’ in more years ... this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day and the Roberts Creek Community Association has secured an Earth Day coordinator in the person of Chris Hergesheimer. I understand this much about myself: there are times when I lead and times when I am led, and with Chris at the helm I am happy to follow. Volunteers are needed to get this community benchmark event off the ground. To do your part, contact Mr. Hergesheimer at roberts

FYI, the General Store is now open till 10 p.m.!

Have a great week and I want to hear about what you have going on in the Gumboot Nation: [email protected]
