We are in the middle of Restorative Justice Week 2020 (Nov. 15-22). In this time of social restrictions, relationships are challenged in ways we have not experienced.
Given that gathering in community, even in small groups, is not a safe or healthy way to come together, the Restorative Justice Program of the Sunshine Coast (RJPSC) is learning to meet virtually over Zoom.
“We have continued to provide restorative processes to both those individuals who have caused harm and those who have been harmed, to seek accountability and healing,” the group said in a release.
“At RJPSC we do not shy away from those challenging conversations needed to advance justice, in order to heal wounds of crime instead of punishing those who do wrong, provide a voice for victims, and connect one another to discuss justice and reparations.
“To this end, a focus in 2020 has been on the training of Circle Keepers. Also, RJPSC has partnered with Organizing Against Racism and Hate to present anti-racism training, and to support dialogues about community action to counter racial incidents locally.”
During National Restorative Justice Week, the group usually sets up tables in Trail Bay Centre and Sunnycrest Mall to reach out to Coast people about the role of the RJPSC and to sign up memberships. This year they have launched a membership drive to connect with past members via an old-fashioned phone tree.
