Reaching her fundraising goals

A successful fundraiser at the Roberts Creek Hall has brought 16-year-old Myah Wallace that much closer to her dream of trekking up Machu Picchu this fall.

A successful fundraiser at the Roberts Creek Hall has brought 16-year-old Myah Wallace that much closer to her dream of trekking up Machu Picchu this fall.

Myah, who lives with disabilities, plans to trek with her mom Angela Carroll-Wallace as part of an awareness and fundraising event organized by EquipKIDS International.

Their fundraiser was held on June 6 and $3,800 was raised, putting Myah well over their goal of $7,000 collected so far.

There were tables groaning under the weight of baked goods donated by local friends, a very popular cotton candy machine donated by Elphinstone Secondary School and a silent auction of more than 50 items, donated almost entirely by local businesses. "The event showcased how a community like the Sunshine Coast can really come together and help each other out," Carroll-Wallace said.

Improv group Hip Bang! started off the entertainment and even invited little Samuel Webb of Roberts Creek to help in one of their hilarious skits. Stellar musical performances abounded, first with the beautiful sounds of Deanna Cartea followed by talented Bonar and Liz. The Friends With Benefits Collective put on a dazzling 40-minute show that highlighted songs by Myah's sister, local songwriter/singer Skye Wallace, who also put together the musical event. Local band Carnival Era ended the afternoon with a rousing set that had everyone up and moving to the beat, including Myah who never dances in public.
