The Volunteer Drivers Program, run through the Vancouver Coastal Health Home Care Services office, has an urgent need for new drivers, volunteer coordinator Ceri Bowles said this week.
Providing rides locally and to Vancouver, the program has been running for more than 20 years and is designed to assist seniors who have no other means of transportation to get to medical appointments.
Last year, over 250 people were able to get to essential medical appointments because of dedicated volunteers, Bowles said.
“This is a non- profit service – the volunteers give their time and the use of their own vehicles, but the clients are billed to cover the costs of gas for the driver. Costs of the ferry for patient and driver are covered by the provincial Travel Assistance Program,” she said.
