Space Traveller won the first place award in the Canadian Association for the Photographic Arts (CAPA).

With international travel gradually opening up, the Sunshine Coast Camera Club will host award-winning photographer, Kathryn McGarvey, on Dec. 6. She will speak about her preparations for a photo shoot in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. The presentation will be open, via Zoom, to all camera club members as well as the public.

An inveterate traveller, most of McGarvey’s travel has been to Europe and Eastern Europe. She recently returned from her seventh trip to Spain, however most of her photography has focused on macro, floral, landscape and architectural photography. “I’ll photograph anything unless it has eyes,” said McGarvey. “I don’t feel as comfortable with street photography or portraiture. I am now gaining some comfort photographing animals.”

Preparing for a trip of a lifetime on an African safari required a steep learning curve in photographing animals and a reassessment of camera equipment. McGarvey’s talk centers on how she prepared, the  gear she found essential, what happened during her safari, and photo processing process.

McGarvey’s awards include a first place award in the Canadian Association for the Photographic Arts (CAPA) for her image “Space Traveler.” This image was selected by CAPA as a Canadian entry into the Four Nations Cup where it placed fourth overall. This past year, she entered the Black and White Spider Awards, the international award honoring black and white photography. Five of her images were selected as nominees and one image, “Destination Unknown,” was named an honouree.

McGarvey comes to photography with a background as an accountant and a competitive golfer in Canada and the U.S.

The Sunshine Coast Camera Club is a member of the Canadian Association of the Photographic Arts and regularly brings in speakers from across Canada via Zoom. The club is always seeking new members regardless of their photographic skill levels and encourages skill development through photo reviews, photo walks, camaraderie and discussion.
