On June 27 the Sunshine Coast Power Squadron will mark its 50th anniversary representing the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) on the Sunshine Coast. CPS is a volunteer-driven organization with a reputation for high-quality boating education. To commemorate this celebration, Gordon Hall, the founding commander of the squadron, was invited as guest speaker to its Annual General Meeting (AGM), on April 21 at Pebbles Restaurant, in Sechelt. In his presentation he spoke of the founding of the squadron, and of his more humorous marine experiences during many years on the water, both recreational and in his professional career.
During the AGM, the annual change of “Watch” occurred, where the outgoing Bridge (executive) is acknowledged for their efforts during the past year, and a new Bridge is sworn in. Those departing this year were Linda Moorcroft (treasurer), Keith Maxwell (training officer), and John Roper (public relations officer). All were thanked for their hard work over the past several years. The new Bridge was then sworn in with the following elected officers: commander – Jack Adams, training officer – Jim Forward, secretary – Rod Moorcroft, treasurer – Janice Reid, membership officer – Trevor Lavender, public relations – Glenn Gourlie, past commander – Bill Foley.
Also in attendance was Commander David Magnussen, representing the Pacific Mainland District of CPS. This is the provincial umbrella organization of 20 British Columbia and Yukon Squadrons. Commander Magnussen spoke briefly about the strong membership growth and the aggressive training and seminar schedule being offered by the Sunshine Coast Squadron. He then presented Gordon Hall and Jack Adams with a certificate from CPS Canada, commemorating the squadron’s 50th anniversary.
The squadron is looking forward to supporting the boating community on the Sunshine Coast in 2016-17.
