After 31 years with Canada Post, Gibsons postmaster Suzanne Leslie has her sights set on a new route -retirement.

A party was held at the Gibsons post office by Leslie's co-workers on Thursday, Sept. 1. Receiving numerous bouquets of flowers and well wishes, Leslie said she was overwhelmed by the attention.

"I can't believe you guys are all here. It makes me not want to go," she said. "I've had a really great career and it's hard to leave."

Leslie's career started when a mail carrier's car broke down outside her house. After the carrier knocked on Leslie's door to ask to use a telephone to get help finishing her route, Leslie offered her assistance.

After driving the heavily pregnant carrier for a few days, the carrier suggested Leslie carry on in the position. Leslie did, and the rest is history.

"She is fantastic and a wonderful person to work with," said Leslie's co-worker, Christian Tidder. "She learns then teaches you everything. I have very much respect for her."

Numerous colleagues echoed Tidder's sentiments about Leslie as well as the many members of the public who showed up to wish Leslie well.

Leslie said she is looking forward to joining her husband who retired 12 years ago, but assured everyone she won't be leaving the post office completely.

"I'm going to see you guys, I'll be around. I've got a pretty great crew here," she said.
