Obituary: Terence C. Webb

'His knowledge of history, science, art, and politics was astonishing, and was combined with an aesthetic sensibility admired by many. His tastes ranged from antique to modern with meticulous attention to design, textiles (especially Persian rugs), furnishings, and art of all mediums. '

Terry Webb lived a full life from start to finish. Born and raised in North London, he was the only child of Ernest and Phyllis Webb. Terry was a bright child with ambitions to rise. An excellent student, he was awarded a full scholarship to Bristol University where he studied dentistry and met his first wife and intellectual match, Janet, also a dental student. His university years were marked by elaborate dinners, abundant wine, and his inauguration as an incurable bon vivant. Terry, Janet, and young Justin immigrated to Canada in 1964 where Scilla and Annabel were born.

Terry lived many places, from London to Bristol, England; Vanderhoof to Gibsons and Vancouver, Canada; and Benidorm, Spain. He returned to the Sunshine Coast in the 1990's with his second wife, Kate. Although he practiced dentistry for decades, he always had an entrepreneurial itch. Real estate was his primary distraction, but the "mono-ski" (just prior to the invention of the snowboard) and water slides in Spain stand out as his most amusing. He was a voracious reader with a breadth of literary tastes; Lucky Jim (Kingsley Amis) held a special place in his heart. His knowledge of history, science, art, and politics was astonishing, and was combined with an aesthetic sensibility admired by many. His tastes ranged from antique to modern with meticulous attention to design, textiles (especially Persian rugs), furnishings, and art of all mediums. He could spend hours perusing a menu or auction catalog. He coveted the fineries of the British gentry, indulged in the butter and cream of the French, and embraced the relaxed culture and foods of the Spanish. Terry was a generous and entertaining host and excellent cook (even though he preferred supervising) with an educated palate and obsessive interest in the quality of food and wine. He greatly admired and respected all forms of craftsmanship. There isn't a sports car T.C. Webb hadn't enjoyed driving at high speed. He was an enthusiast with a dry sense of humour and great love for his dogs.

Terry was predeceased by Kate, his beloved wife of 32 years. Despite the challenges of a global pandemic and his declining health, Terry shared a special final chapter of his life with his partner Sue. He will be sadly missed by his children Justin (Karen), Scilla (Brian) and Annabel (Panos); his grandchildren Riley, Olivia, Hilary, Vanessa, Rachel, Sirus and Zoe; and his great-grandchildren, Cruz, Jett and Willow.
