April 15, 1973 - August 16, 2025
Ian was born in Ottawa on 15 April 1973 to Phillip and Julie Kirkland. The family relocated to BC in 1974, and Ian grew up in Vancouver. After spending childhood summers and holidays at the family's cabin in Granthams, Ian moved to the Sunshine Coast full-time in the early 1990s.
Ian had a lifelong appreciation and respect for nature - the Coast nourished that in him. He loved to share the beauty of his garden, feeding friends and family with its bounty. Indeed, Ian was a creative wizard in the kitchen and took great pleasure in preparing dazzling meals for his loved ones to enjoy. He loved the freedom of being on the water in his boat. Especially, he loved fishing and relished those contemplative stretches of time, punctuated by the excitement of the strike. A talented musician and songwriter, Ian performed at several venues on the Sunshine Coast. He shared his home with a sequence of cats to whom he was both affectionate and devoted; holiday cards were typically sent on behalf of both Ian and his current feline companion.
Ian is survived and greatly missed by his mother Julie, his sister Heather and brother-in-law Jonathan, his nieces Georgia and Kate, his brother Steve and sister-in-law Seema, and his nephew Dashiell. Ian was predeceased by his father, Phil. A wide circle of friends and neighbours, those Ian chose to embrace as family, remembers his gentleness, humour and kindness.
A celebration of Ian's life will be planned for the fall, and further details will be circulated in due course. To request information about the event, please contact [email protected]. At this time, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society or the charity of your choice.
A meteor burns brightly, but briefly. We fondly close our eyes to retain the afterglow of its passing.
