Pender Harbour finally has the Sprockids mountain bike training program.

This winter the Rotary Club of Pender Harbour, introduced Doug Detwiller, creator of Sprockids, to the parents of Madeira Park Elementary School. The program introduces the sport of mountain biking to youth, giving them the opportunity to develop skills, values and strategies that will enable them to succeed in the outdoors, in school and in life.

"We saw the huge benefit this would be for our kids and to families," said Mara Mattson, co-ordinator of the Pender Harbour Outdoors Club. "A small group was formed and we found a few extra parents with a passion for kids and outdoor activities who could ride bikes. We formed the Pender Harbour Outdoor Club and Sprockids Pender Harbour was launched. Rotary contributed $700 towards the cost of training the trainers."

So far, 14 kids have enrolled in the spring/fall season.

During the summer, they will continue to go on weekly family rides. Those interested in joining the family rides or enrolling in the program can contact Mattson or Silke Linnmann at [email protected].

"Rotary is still providing support for the ongoing success of Sprockids Pender Harbour," Mattson added. "They are a great sounding board and are waiting to hear from us what is needed: a skills park, bikes or transport trailer. We could not have done this with out them."
