Sherryl Latimer is the new program and outreach coordinator at the Sechelt Library.

Coordinating community events and programs is what Sherryl Latimer does and has been doing for over 30 years in communities in both Alberta and B.C. Now she is the new program and outreach coordinator at the Sechelt Library.

Latimer and her family have lived in Sechelt for 10 years and during that time she has been connected to the Community Resource Centre, the Sechelt Visitors Centre, the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society, the Sunshine Coast Arts Council, Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts, and other organizations.

Reading books, researching her Métis heritage, and exploring new ideas are part of Latimer’s everyday life. Some of her favourite books include: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, The Birth House by Ami McKay, The Red Tent by Anita Diamont, Dying to Be Me by Anita Moorjani, Life is Good by Bert and John Jacob, and Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Suess.

“It is clear from the results of our spring community survey that there is need for library programs,” said chief librarian Margaret Hodgins, who welcomes Latimer’s expertise. “When asked what the focus of the library should be in the next four years, the survey showed library programs as one of the top responses. The library is great place for people of all ages to connect.”

In 2015, the library welcomed over 111,000 people through its doors.

Latimer will be asking for program ideas from library patrons during the first two weeks of November and will start planning for 2017.
