On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Sechelt Seniors' Activity Centre will be hosting its biggest fundraiser ever.

The draw for the 10-day Holland America cruise for two will take place at this event. Musicians led by Miss Berni G, singers and comedians will provide 90 minutes of entertainment. A giant silent auction is planned with more than 50 items. A balloon draw will feature another 30 items, and there will be a 50/50 draw. Finger foods will be available.

Scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m., doors will open at 1 p.m. to let everyone get a head start on the silent auction.

Featured will be a donation of hearing aids from Connect Hearing, valued at $4,600 with bidding starting at $1,000. A VIA Rail donation valued at over $1,000 is for a return train trip for two from Vancouver to Jasper, with bidding starting at $500. And there are seven-day travel vacation packages for four people, valued from $1,900 to $2,700; minimum bids are required for these fabulous items.

Other auction items include overnights at two casinos, West Coast Wilderness Lodge, Backeddy Resort, Accents Inns, several gift certificates for Troll's, Pebbles and Blue Heron restaurants, return air fare to both Victoria and Nanaimo, collectibles, gift baskets, eye care, paintings, oil and lube, tire rotations, bathing suits and much more. There is something for everyone at this event.

The balloon draw is new to the seniors' fundraising. Basically people pay $20 for a balloon with 29 items valued between $20 and $50 and one large prize for the last ticket drawn. This is the one draw where everyone wins, but you have to be at the musical gala event to buy a ticket. Admission is $15, and only 200 can attend. Tickets are available now at the Activity Centre.

Tickets for the cruise have been on sale during the summer and can also be purchased at the Activity Centre and at Mosaic Market in Davis Bay.

Why the huge fundraiser? The sound system at the Activity Centre is giving problems and needs to be upgraded. Many renters have expressed their disappointment with the current system and the fact they expect a reliable system. Our members have experienced the problems firsthand at meetings, activities and special events. It will cost over $10,000 to upgrade and meet all users' needs and expectations, and the Activity Centre just doesn't have the money. We hope to raise $6,000 at this event (including the cruise raffle), and other fundraising possibilities are being explored.

This is your opportunity to obtain something you really want at a reduced price and help the Seniors' Centre in a big way. Help us sell out the entire Centre on Saturday, Oct. 19. It's only $15, and the entertainment will be great. Bring your wallets and cheque books; Visa and debit are not available at this time.
