This year’s Mini Maker Faire at Dougall Park in Gibsons will have a huge lineup of exhibitors, workshops and a new feature called lightning talks.
The second official Sunshine Coast Mini Maker Faire will be held on Sunday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and organizers say it will represent a major expansion over the inaugural event.
Put on by CoastMakers.com, a group of “do-it-yourselfer-meets-technology” enthusiasts on the Sunshine Coast, the Mini Maker Faire will feature 26 exhibitors, including David Piasta and his amplified cigar box guitars, Pender Harbour Senior Secondary’s ROV (underwater remote operated vehicle), Medieval makers, textile and jewelry makers, Coast Salish weaving, Elphinstone Science Kids, Spider Kids go karts, and many more.
The 10 workshops range from building a solar race car and do-it-yourself musical instruments to learning to solder and how to make lip balm and face scrubs.
The workshops are a variety of formats from drop-in to scheduled and/or pre-register; go to the Coast Makers website for more information.
New this year are the Faire’s lightning talks – very short presentations lasting only a few minutes, covering a specific topic such as “What it is to be a Maker,” “Arts & Trades: Building the Tiny Community Centre” and “What is IoT” (Internet of Things).
Maker and Mini Maker Faires are held in over 150 communities around the world, an extension of the popular and widely-read Make Magazine. They are family-friendly showcases of invention, creativity and resourcefulness for modern day MacGuyvers.
Lead organizers include Dave Chisholm, Dan Williams, Duane Perret, Jay Calvert, Derek Anderson, Roxanne Finnie, Diane Mueller, Laurie McConnell, and Bryan Cramer.
