Sunshine Coast resident Rebecca Weinberger had a taste of success at the recent Vancouver Fashion Week.
Weinberger recently graduated from Vancouver's Lasalle College where she studied fashion design. Just before graduation, students had the chance to participate in VancouverFashion Week where they were able to showcase their designs and get some hands-on experience.
Weinberger was excited to participate, but had to work fast.
"Our head administrator told us we needed four pieces, and I only had three. So I had to rip one out, but I did manage to put four pieces together. I made a collection based on 1930s lingerie but turned into wearable clothing," explained Weinberger.
In addition to showing her designs, Weinberger worked behind the scenes to find and prepare the models who would wear her collection on the runway.
One challenge Weinberger experienced was the fact she had not designed her items with Vancouver Fashion Week in mind.
"I made the dresses for me, not knowing they would be in Fashion Week. So I had to find some oddly proportioned models, but I managed to luck out and find some great models," she said
Once things were organized, her collection hit the runway, and Weinberger saw her hard work pay off.
"It was really cool. It was a great experience to finally see my stuff walk down the runway and have it very professional looking, and have a line that I was proud of," she said.
Next steps for Weinberger include making a small sample collection on the Sunshine Coast, a location she said she finds very inspiring.
"I'm more creative when I've got more space. I have a big sewing room and I love it here. The creativity and inspiration I get here is great. I love being able to look at the ocean and sew," she said.
