The Sunshine Coast Hospice Society’s Lights of Life campaign has now begun: come and write a card to hang on the tree in remembrance of those no longer with us this holiday season. Last year, more than 600 cards were written at the Lights of Life tables staffed by Hospice volunteers.
The Gibsons Sunnycrest Mall will host the Lights of Light table until Dec. 5; from Dec. 7 to 19 the table will be located in Sechelt at the Trail Bay Centre. There will also be a Lights of Life table outside the IGA in Madeira Park on Dec. 5, 12, 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Since 1995, our community has gathered on New Year’s Day around a ceremonial bonfire at Snickett Park beach to burn the cards written at the Lights of Life tables. However, this year the ceremony will be at Mission Point Park in Davis Bay, a site that offers increased accessibility and a warm gathering place to enjoy a hot drink.
Beginning at 2 p.m. on Jan. 1, a short program will be followed with songs from the Threshold Choir, a women’s group who sings at the bedsides of the dying.
Since the holiday season can be difficult for those who are grieving, the Hospice Society will host a Blue Christmas Tea on Friday, Dec. 18 at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend at Kirkland Centre, located at 4602 Simpkins Road in Davis Bay.
