Gibsons and District Public Library is inviting the community to the library on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. for a presentation on mushrooms and fungi.

Presenter Duane Sept is a biologist, freelance nature photographer and writer. He is also a Sunshine Coast resident and author of the book Common Mushrooms of the Northwest, the result of many years of locating, identifying and photographing various species of mushrooms from Alaska to northern California. During this time, Sept has found that mushrooms make excellent photographic subjects. They don't run away and don't wave around in the wind, like most photographic subjects.

It is estimated there are approx-imately 10,000 to 30,000 species of fungi in the Pacific Northwest alone. With such an array of species, this kingdom is truly a gem to discover.

Sept's presentation will feature the many colours, shapes and textures of fungi. Many of the common species found in this area will be identified and the edible and poisonous species will be featured as well.

During his career, Sept has worked on various wildlife species from wrens to wolves, as well as more sedentary species from anemones to amanitas. He now devotes much of his time to writing and making photographs for various book projects. He is also the author of The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life in the Pacific Northwest.
