Teamwork gets things done. This is particularly true of the many volunteer organizations that help our Sunshine Coast community thrive. Hike for Hospice, an annual cross-Canada event, is an example of teamwork at its best. You can be part of the team on Sunday May 6, noon to 2:30 p.m. at Mission Point Park. This joyful community celebration with music, clowns, food and a short parade along the Davis Bay seawall, unites people of all ages and backgrounds in support of the important work of the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society.
Participants can join the fun and raise funds as individuals or by forming a team as several organizations and businesses have done. The Sunshine Dragons Abreast paddling group says this about their participation: “Sunshine Dragons Abreast is a strong supporter of the Hospice Society. The ongoing care their members exhibit is extraordinary. What keeps us coming out to paddle, regardless of weather or level of recovery is our shared experience and a fierce desire to live well to the end of our lives. Hospice is inextricably linked to this process.”
Cooperators has also formed a Hike for Hospice team. “Protecting what is most important to you is our mission. Making sure our loved ones are cared for in all situations, especially the hard ones, is so important and closely tied to what we do. The care the Hospice Society provides is meaningful beyond words. To help our loved ones be as comfortable as possible and provide support where support is unavailable is so important and special. We are excited to participate and support the Hospice Society!”
The Hospice Society receives no sustaining funding from any level of government and is entirely dependent upon the generosity of our community. All funds raised stay on the Coast and are used to support the work of more than 70 dedicated volunteers who provide compassionate support to those facing end of life and bereavement. As an integral part of the Palliative Care team, the Hospice Society is involved with approximately 50 per cent of the palliative deaths on the Coast annually.
Getting involved in the Hike for Hospice event is simple. To donate or to register as an individual or a team, go to www.coasthospice.com and click on the Hike for Hospice link.
