Harbour highlights: Beginning April with a BOGO sale and turkey – lots of turkey

From the Bargain Barn to a pie auction to tax season, here’s what’s happening in the Harbour area this month

Tomorrow, Saturday April 1, The Bargain Barn will celebrate the return of their children’s wear department with an exciting sale of “Buy one, get one free” on selected children’s clothing. The Barn is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Wednesday. 

Also happening tomorrow, the Legion’s annual and very popular April Easter Ham/Turkey draw and Pie auction, including 10 donated turkeys. Three o’clock is the early bird draw. Come out and join the fun and support your local Legion. Get there early to grab a seat. 

The Legion invites those folks interested in playing darts to please join them next Thursday, April 6, for a meet and greet. Bring your darts. They look forward to starting this project with your attendance. Please arrive for the 6 p.m. start. There will be no food this week and it will be dependent on participation going forward. 

Celebrate the arrival of spring by helping local wildlife! A family-friendly Homes for Wildlife workshop will be offered on Sunday, April 2, in the Tranquility Garden behind the EarthFair Store. Community members of all ages are warmly invited to join biologists from the Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project to build their own bat houses, swallow nest boxes, owl nest boxes, or mason bee homes from easy-to-assemble kits. Drop by any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to build a box, chat about local wildlife, or learn how to get involved in local habitat stewardship and wildlife monitoring activities. Kits take about 30 minutes to assemble, and ready-made nest boxes will also be available. Cost for materials is $25 for swallow boxes and $40 for all other boxes. Kits subject to availability. The first musical event of April is when the Pender Harbour Music Society (PHMS) presents The Slocan Ramblers this Sunday, April 2. Come enjoy fine blue grass crafting by Canada’s hottest roots band and winner of the album of the year at the 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Tickets $30 on the PHMS website. Concert starts at 3:30 p.m. at the School of Music. 

FLAIR on the Coast will be meeting on Saturday, April 8, 10 a.m. to noon at the Rockwood Centre in Sechelt. Andre Casaubon, who has been practising and teaching yoga for 50 years, will be the guest speaker.  He will start by meditation techniques to help reduce stress, anxiety, pain and sleeplessness to become more relaxed and calmer. Tuesday, April 11, Women’s Connection guest speaker Barbara McAllister will present the healing practice of sound bath therapy that can balance the autonomic nervous system, release congested energies and bring about a state of deep relaxation. The gong is an effective instrument that assists individuals to detach from the pressures of life through an induced meditative state. The sound of the gong helps to clear the mind, increase circulation in the body, and assist with the release and reorganization of emotional energy that is stagnant in the body. Join at the School of Music for a 10 a.m. start. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. The drop-in fee is $4. 

Coast Hospice in Pender Harbour Grief Support Group will hold sessions starting Wednesday, April 5, to May 24 (8 weeks) from 1 to 3 p.m. at the PH Health Centre. This support group creates a compassionate environment where you can connect with other members of our community who are also experiencing grief. Facilitators Sharon Halford and Caron Hawrychuck are Hospice-trained volunteers. The program is free. Registration is required by phone 604-740-0475 ext. 3 or email [email protected]

Less than a month left until the deadline to file your income tax return. If you need help with your income tax preparation Volunteer Income Tax Program is available until April 30. This is a free service for eligible clients. Three options are available: Walk in Clinics at the PH Community School and PH Health Centre, drop off at the same locations, and by appointment. Donations for the Pender Harbour Community Club’s Annual Plant Sale Event April 29 can be dropped off at The Hall the same time as Bargain Barn Donations: Fridays from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. Mention they are for the plant sale.
