A diverse crowd gathered at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall on March 30, to celebrate the 80th birthday of shíshálh elder, xwu'p'a'lich Barb Higgins. The celebration included dancing, drumming and a lot of music, socializing and some truly fabulous food. People were welcomed by Popois, MC for the evening, and xwu'p'a'lich herself.

Higgins grew up in Egmont where she was schooled in traditional ways. After attending university, she taught in the north for many years, while also raising a family. Her daughter Holly-Ann and three grandsons were on hand to join in the celebration. Holly-Ann thanked her mother for insisting that she take up drumming and sang some songs, and then her son Robert, with as powerful a voice as his mother's, sang and drummed many pieces accompanied by two other drummers.

Wes Nahani offered a gracious welcome and spoke of Higgins' generosity, wisdom and steadfastness. His powerful songs were well received by all assembled. A great many shared stories, including Ed Hill, who recounted Pulling Together events and recalled how xwu'p'a'lich was always on hand to offer words of wisdom, especially to the younger people. He spoke of what a unifying force she has been across cultural lines. Others expressed how knowing her was a major influence in their lives. Many spoke about Higgins' remarkable storytelling and writing abilities. She is a published author and has a great blog at barbhiggins.wordpress.com.

As it was Easter weekend, several stood to offer regrets for people unable to attend. The successful event ended with the cutting and sharing of a giant celebratory cake. xwu'p'a'lich and her family thank everyone who helped make the day special, by decorating, cooking, cleaning, speaking or singing, and express their gratitude for the many friends and family who came from out of town to help celebrate her 80th birthday.
