Halfmoon Happenings: Weather looks good for the Sail Pass this weekend

Fundraising continues for Neighbours Helping Neighbours
Halfmoon Bay

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and are enjoying these sunny days.

As the days are getting shorter and the nights colder and longer, we can appreciate the somewhat mild winter we are experiencing thus far. Although temperatures are dipping slightly below 0 C, this may not seem very cold to us but is cold for our furry friends. Be sure to provide a warm, dry place if your pet is outside and bring them in if below freezing temperatures continue for longer than a few days. Hummingbirds and other birds may need some extra attention as well. Check feeders regularly to make sure the nectar and seeds are not frozen. Place bird houses or nesting boxes in trees or bushes in case the birds find these enclosures a warmer and safer place to roost.

At the time of writing this column, the weather looks good for the 2022 Halfmoon Bay Sail Pass tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 17 with at least 10 to 15 boats committed to participate. If the weather does not cooperate, Sunday, Dec. 18 has been suggested as a back-up. For updates, go to the Halfmoon Bay BC Everything Facebook page or send an email to Lynn at hiballeraccounting@telus.net or call Lynn at 604-838-7272. The Secret Cove Marina fuel dock will be open at 1 p.m. should anyone need to fuel up before heading out. There will also be hot beverages provided at the dock so please stop by to say hello whether you’re on a boat or just popping by. It’s not too late to participate with your decorated boat so please contact Lynn as soon as possible. Boats will converge near Merry Island and then cruise along the shoreline at dusk. Coopers Green Park and the Halfmoon Bay Government Wharf are good viewing areas with limited parking. Welcome Beach is a great viewing spot, but parking is very limited. Please be respectful of driveway entrances and properties when parking in the area.

The Halfmoon Bay Community Association’s Neighbours Helping Neighbours fundraising campaign will continue until Dec. 24 so it’s not too late to donate. HBCA President Linda McMahon shared that, “There was a flurry of donations over the last week or so with total donations received at close to $10,000. While we set Dec. 24 as our target end date, we will of course accept donations through to year end.” If your donation is greater than $50, a tax receipt will be provided upon request. The HBCA is not a registered charity so if you would like a charitable tax receipt for your donation, make cheque payable to SD46, indicating in the memo line “HBCA Neighbours Helping Neighbours” then contact the HBCA at info@halfmoon-bay.ca to arrange pick-up or delivery. All cheques will then be delivered to SD46 and they will send you a charitable donation tax receipt. For complete donation information, visit the HBCA Fundraising page at halfmoon-bay.ca/donate or the GoFundMe option on the Halfmoon Bay BC Everything Facebook page. The Halfmoon Bay Community Association, the Halfmoon Bay Elementary School, volunteers, teachers, students, families and residents of this community are very grateful for your generous donations!

If you have any ideas for column content or have a community event or story you would like to share, please send ideas and suggestions to cindy.kisser@telus.net.
