Halfmoon Happenings

Halfmoon Bay

The 49th annual Halfmoon Bay Country Fair begins this weekend. It starts Saturday, July 11 at 10 a.m. with the kids fishing tournament on the wharf. Competitors should meet outside the General Store and Halfmoon Bay Café. Fishing poles will be supplied to those without.

This is followed by the Firemen’s Challenge at the fire hall at noon. Watch our HMB volunteer firemen go through their paces.

At 6 p.m. doors open for a family salmon barbecue and dance to the live music of Larrie Cook and the Bluesmasters at Coopers Green Park. Dinner is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 each, $8 for under 16, free for under two, available at HMB General Store, Welcome Woods Market and Pastimes in Sechelt. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

On Sunday it is the traditional Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary’s pancake breakfast. It runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Coopers Green Park followed by the opening of the HMB Country Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a free fun bus running from HMB School to the fair travelling at regular intervals; this is a fundraiser for HMB School/Childcare as they have been sponsored per passenger.

Fair highlights are music on the open stage, beer garden with local crafted beer, kids games, pony rides, bingo, raffles, sack races, tug-o-war, three-legged race, yoga and tai chi demonstrations, kids’ dunk tank and an excellent selection of local vendors, crafters and services.

Boaters are reminded that while the fair is on, traffic at the launch will be congested. The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue will be on hand to control marine traffic.

Join Summer Strongstart in the backyard at Half-moon Bay Community School Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting July 15. Great fun for families with children birth to five. They would like to send a big thank you to the Welcome Beach Association for their generous support enabling them to run this much loved program.

Also, the Wonder Wheels Bookmobile will be visiting the school Thursdays at 11 a.m. in the back parking lot by the portables. If you haven’t seen the bus yet, check it out: it’s super cool!
