Gumboot Nation: Summer, is that really you?

'My summer schedule is filling up fast, as yours is too. I asked a long-time Coast friend if he had plans to leave over the summer, he said, and I quote, “Do you think I put up with the winters here just to leave?” Enjoy yourself, here are a few ways how.'

Lots of music, lots of fun in Roberts Creek this week.

Dear loyal readers (there are dozens of you), sorry I missed last week. Life sometimes gets in the way. I see by the light of my daytimer that it won’t be the last time I leave you to your own devices (we have a lot of devices don’t we?) My summer schedule is filling up fast, as yours is too. I asked a long-time Coast friend if he had plans to leave over the summer, he said, and I quote, “Do you think I put up with the winters here just to leave?” Enjoy yourself, here are a few ways how:

July 1 brings a plethora of activities, all rolled into one busy Friday. In Montreal you would be moving, helping a friend move, or be tempted to take home abandoned furnishing discarded in a move, as July 1 is the beginning and end of all leases. Like a line of hermit crabs, everyone looks for a shell that fits better, a wonder to watch.

The hot ticket is the Burying Ground with Petunia! A special event for a local cause, the profits will offset some costs associated with the stellar reno to our beloved community hall. Bring a chair, some drink (no glass!) and a fist full of fives ($25) for a family friendly time in the barn at Mise-en-place, 1025 Byng Road. Be prepared for a unique evening of sights, sounds, and smells. There will be washboards and horses! Doors at 7 p.m. Music at 7:30 p.m.

Legion #219 hosts Canada Day Celebration: Outdoor Stage kicks off from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with Rodeo Jonz, Brad Wells, Robin Atchison and Michelle Morand. (Members free, guest $5 for this bit) Then the music moves inside 8 p.m. as the Jeevious Family Band and the Sofa Kings take over. (Members $8, guest $15 to $10 if you have already purchased outdoor stage). Kitchen is open for culinary needs of all and sundry.

July 2 brings the end of the road for The Shapes We’re In. The final waltz of the highly entertaining outfit is at the community hall (playing Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene etc.) 19+ cash-only bar, $30 (email [email protected] for tickets) Shuttles provided by Coastal Rides! (get the @ app-play.google.com)  World Image, Estelle & The Honeydews and Tetrahedron round out the night. Fun to the fourth power!

July 3 marks Slow Sundays, season seven! That’s more seasons than any Netflix show! Graham Walker brings the best musical talent the Sunshine Coast has on offer to the Gazebo each week, all summer long.  Monty Montego is the season opener, and each week Graham will present a new home run! Bring your chairs, blankets, hydration and slow down for an afternoon. From noon to 4 p.m.

Next weekend I recommend The Gravel-Aires, at Roberts Creek Legion, Friday the 8th. Twangy, hurtin’ tunes that remind me of living beside railroad tracks, drinking whisky with John Steinbeck and Tom Waits. Get tickets through robertscreeklegion.com. Listen at thegravel-aires.bandcamp.com

July 9 and 10 is a two-day self-guided studio tour called the Pottery Prowl: 14 Potters at 12 Venues! For more info: linktr.ee/potteryprowl.
