Greetings Creekers!
Well, I started out this morning by forgetting what day it is. I was truly confused. The combination of trips, long weekends and an old brain will do that. Of course, being retired is a factor and I recognize that being able to lose track of time is a kind of privilege. Anyway, having only just remembered to write this column, it will be hasty and short (maybe)!
Let’s start with culture and entertainment.
This weekend it’s the second annual Pottery Prowl. Studios up and down the Coast will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you go to https://linktr.ee/potteryprowl you can access a map and other info. Combine that with a picnic or lunch out, maybe a stop for a dip in the ocean, and you can have yourself and your guests a lovely day.
If outdoor music is more your thing, you can travel north to Sechelt on Saturday where you will find live music in Hackett Park. At noon it’s Back Porch Reunion playing the blues and at 1 p.m. it’s those Notty Dotters playing joyful, foot-stomping music from Zimbabwe on their marimbas.
Here in the Creek, “Slow Sundays” has started up again with live music behind the gazebo from noon to 3:30 p.m. This week’s lineup includes Al Burns and Dave Stavroff and Martini Madness.
At the Legion on Saturday night, it’s DJ Chakrapher and don’t forget the Wednesday Night Jam. On Thursday night, it’s jazz with Orca Revolution. Their music is described as “too dangerous and beautiful for festivals.” Hmmmm.
It will be Reggae party at the Hall this Saturday featuring Daniel Wesley with a full band. Tickets at Eventbrite or at the door. A hot summer night and reggae is a great combo.
Coming up at the Hall on Friday, July 21, it’s DJ Shub. Formerly of a Tribe Called Red, he is considered to be “the godfather of the ‘Pow Wow Step.’” Now I have never experienced the Pow Wow Step but just the name gets me in the mood for dancing. DJ Shub won the 2022 Juno Award for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year, so it is a big deal that this Mohawk artist will be playing our hall. He will be accompanied by DJ Deano from the Heiltsuk Nation and when you get hungry, Semir will be there with everyone’s favourite hot dogs. This will be a great night with all proceeds going to support the Hall. Tickets are $25 in advance at Tickettailor or $30 the door.
While on the subject of music, just a heads up, the Rogue Fest Arts Festival is coming up Aug. 18 to 20 and tickets are available now and selling out fast. Check it out at roguefest.ca.
This is the busy season for One Straw. Be sure to check out their Tiny Farm behind the Gumboot. The farm produce stand is open now. If you are a member, don’t forget about the next member Potluck Dinner on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. You can share ideas and questions while enjoying the midsummer bounty from each other’s gardens. Also, there a couple of courses that you might want to sign up for. On Sunday, July 23 at 10 a.m., it’s a course in herbal medicine and you can learn about plant identification and all kinds of information about how to use and store herbs. On Aug. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a natural fabric dye workshop and you can dye a t-shirt or a tea towel or?? It needs to be a natural fabric, polyester won’t work! Go to onestraw.ca for all the information you need.
Yesterday I passed by the food cupboard, which was pretty empty except for some blender parts. What?? Come on people! This is a food cupboard, not a place for you to get rid of stuff you don’t want. Please don’t be lazy and leave stuff there or anywhere in the Gazebo park. While we are on that subject, a big thank you goes out to Byron Brock for donating the wooden sign that is on the back of the library. Byron has his workshop across the street, where he makes and sells custom signs. Check them out!
